1940's hair styles?

I need to find specific descriptions for doing a short hairstyle in a late 1930's or early 1940's style. Did Google - not much. Help!

They were close and smooth around the head but curled or flipped (using bobby pins in an "x" called a pin curl) at the ends. Claudette Colbert was perfect for those days, have you ever seen It Happened One Night (center pic)?
